PGA FedEx St. Jude: Overhyped or Underrated Golf Event of the Year?

As the high-level golf season starts to wind down, the anticipation builds with the US Open taking place at Royal Troon this week. Being the last Major of the year, every golfer is vying for those crucial FedEx Cup points. While some tournaments undeniably hold more prestige, it's worth debating the significance of the FedEx St. Jude Championship. In this blog, we'll dive into whether the FedEx St. Jude is truly overrated or, as we believe, an underrated gem in the golf world.

The FedEx St. Jude Championship: An Underrated Gem in the Golf Event Calendar

When thinking about must-watch golf tournaments, the FedEx St. Jude Championship might not be the first that comes to mind. However, it’s one of the most underrated events of the year, and here’s why:

  1. A Hefty Purse-With a staggering $20,000,000 purse, the FedEx St. Jude Championship boasts one of the highest prize funds in golf. To put this in perspective, it surpasses the US Open, which has a $17 million purse. This significant prize pool attracts top-tier talent, making for an intensely competitive and exciting tournament.

  2. A Points Bonanza- PGA players have the opportunity to earn a whopping 2,000 FedEx Cup points at this event. In comparison, most tournaments offer between 200 and 750 points. This makes the FedEx St. Jude Championship a critical event for players aiming to climb the leaderboard and secure their position later in the season. It’s a chance for golfers to make significant strides in their FedEx Cup standings, adding a layer of strategic importance to their performance.

Fedex St. Jude Predictions and Standings

Last year's champion, Lucas Glover, pulled off an amazing victory in a playoff against Patrick Cantlay, and we would love to see another. One of the best parts about a golf event ending in a tie in dramatic fashion is the pressure of a playoff. Typically, golfers can recover from bad shots on the next couple of holes or later in the round, but not in a playoff. The best shots must be hit by both players as they go head-to-head on the hardest holes of the course. One mistake may cost you $2 million, so a lot is on the line.

With the FedEx St. Jude Championship often underrated, it's a prime opportunity for golfers to boost their points standings. Winning this event could be the game-changer they need to secure their spot in the top ranks.

Past Winners Never Prevail

Time will tell, as golf is notoriously unpredictable. The field will be filled with the best golfers of the year, all competing for larger purses and crucial FedEx Cup points. But as we’ve seen, the best don’t always win. Last year, some big names made it into the top 10, but in the end, it was a player ranked 44th who prevailed!

This year, all eyes are on Rory McIlroy, despite a rough stretch filled with cracked nerves. We believe he will channel all his energy and focus on winning more tournaments and accumulating those essential cup points. It’s going to be an exciting finish to the season, and anything can happen!
