Youtube Creator Classic, PGA Investment in Social Media Golf

YouTube golfers have taken the world by storm, offering realistic, competitive, and relatable entertainment for golf enthusiasts. With dynamic content and collaborations, groups like Good Good have solidified their presence in the golf influencer category. As their viewership increased, so did their production levels, featuring higher quality courses and introducing outlandish and entertaining gimmicks. A vast majority of people interested in golf have encountered these influencers in one way or another. Recognizing this trend, the PGA is betting on viewership by introducing tournaments like the Creator Classic. This move aims to attract more eyes to golf, ultimately benefiting the PGA, LIV, and other areas of the sport.

Youtube Creator Classic Event to Stream on ESPN+ and Peacock, Produced by 'Full Swing' Team

The tour has announced an exciting event taking place on Wednesday, August 28th at 4 PM, to be streamed on ESPN+ and Peacock. Similar to a live PGA Tour event, the Creator Classic will feature professional commentary and shot tracers for enhanced production quality. The media production will be handled by the creators of the popular Netflix show "Full Swing."

The tour has been cautious about embracing the lighthearted nature of YouTube golf. However, with the rising popularity of social media, they are recognizing the need for change. By introducing events like the Creator Classic, they aim to attract more viewers and bring greater attention to golf. The PGA Tour is careful not to compromise the prestigious and elite nature of the game, opting to explore innovative ways to grow the sport without sacrificing their esteemed reputation.

PGA Tour Lacking Engagement

We've witnessed a dramatic rise in the popularity of YouTube golfers, but this doesn't always translate to benefits for the PGA Tour. The Myrtle Beach Classic, for example, garnered nearly a million views, showing the potential of social media to engage new audiences. Popular social media stars undeniably bring fresh energy to the game. Even professional golfers like Bryson DeChambeau are enhancing engagement with YouTube series like "Breaking 50 from the Reds," demonstrating the growing intersection between traditional golf and digital media.

Great Ideas and Poor Execution

Lower-tier events have historically struggled to attract viewership relative to their production costs, leading the PGA Tour to overlook alternative platforms like YouTube golf. However, the tour is now starting to recognize and leverage the potential of these avenues. The Myrtle Beach Classic, for instance, was a promising experiment with high viewership but didn't translate into increased PGA Tour retention as hoped.

This shift towards embracing social media is still a powerful strategy. With popular social media stars bringing fresh energy and engagement to the game, there's a vast, untapped market for the PGA Tour to explore. By investing wisely and placing the right individuals in charge, the PGA Tour can significantly benefit from third-tier tournaments and the growing intersection between traditional golf and digital media.
